What does it mean for a person to be autonomous? Starting from a philosophical riddle on personal autonomy, and challenging contemporary approaches, this book argues that autonomy is a 'dense' normative term that stands for a particular kind of practical authority. On this basis, it develops a notion of autonomy that solves the riddle, outlining an appropriate conception of personal self-determination.
